API Advanced Search Logic Change

Last week’s point release update to Hoover’s API made a change to core logic. This change was meant to ensure that Advanced Search Functionality Location based searches worked the same way in Hoover’s API as it does on Hoover’s Online. On the Hoover’s site, Locations are inclusive. For example, if you select two countries, you receive results of companies that are in either country. This is especially true for the UK, which contains multiple countries.

Changing the core logic, however, changed the default inclusive nature of all location based searches not just country searches. For example, now searching for Country: US, State: TX, City: Austin, returns companies in Austin, companies in Texas and Companies in the US, or every company that matches in the US.

We are in the process of changing the default logic back to be less inclusive while maintaining the inclusive nature of Country-within-Country searches like the UK example, however, this fix is not scheduled until late May. If your implementation depends upon exclusivity in the Location based searches, there is a simple code change that will help:

In Advanced Company search set the \bal\location\allAny to ALL (see http://developer.hoovers.com/docs34/company#2.2 for more information). This will force Location searches to match on all parameters.
Alternatively, use only the most restrictive location search parameters, using the Austin example, search for City: Austin only.

We appreciate your patience with this change and apologize for any inconvenience.

    Sincerely,

We have now changed the default logic back to be less inclusive for Location-based searches. While the default logic has been returned to the original defaults, we recommend that you always explicitly specify the matching parameters and do not depend solely on defaults.

We appreciate your patience with this change and apologize for any inconvenience.

    Sincerely,
